Sati was an age old practice among some Hindu communities wherein a widow sacrificed herself by leaping into her husband’s funeral pyre. The location where Lord Sati’s throat fell is believed to be where the Nalhateshwari temple was built.

The Nalhati town where it is located is just a few kilometers from Tarapith.
